Tuesday Champions League Roundup: Shaw Suffers Broken Leg Juventus Stun City

Manchester United received a double blow in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night as full-back Luke Shaw suffered a broken leg during a 2-1 defeat at PSV Eindhoven.

Shaw, 20, had been enjoying a good start to the season but is now likely to face a lengthy layoff following a horrific injury. The incident occurred during the first half in Eindhoven, when PSV defender Hector Moreno slid into a challenge as Shaw entered the opposition's box.

After a delay of about 10 minutes—during which Shaw received oxygen while lying on the pitch—Shaw left the game on a stretcher. Referee Nicola Rizzoli did not call a foul on the play, nor did he discipline Moreno.

The Mexican center-back appeared distraught after the challenge, but ESPN's Craig Burley called the incident a "disgrace." Moreno himself suffered a broken leg during a World Cup match in 2014.

Words of support for Shaw quickly poured in from around the world. Footballers and other athletes joined journalists in wishing the 20-year-old a quick recovery on Twitter:

The match finally resumed after the long delay, and for a short time, it appeared United might be able to win the game for their fallen teammate.

Memphis Depay—facing his former club for the first time since leaving PSV in the summer—netted a superb goal after tearing through the box with outstanding ball skills. But Moreno, the player who caught Shaw with the fateful challenge, equalized for PSV with a header in first-half stoppage time.

The night worsened for United in the 57th minute, when Luciano Narsingh headed in the winner. Maxime Lestienne assisted both goals for PSV.

Afterwards, attention quickly shifted back to Shaw. United announced that the player had suffered a double fracture and would undergo surgery upon his return to Manchester. Shaw, meanwhile, tweeted an inspirational message in which he vowed to "return stronger":

"It is awful," said Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, who called Moreno's tackle "very bad," per BBC Sport. "The boy is in his second season and he has been playing fantastic. And now this happens."

Manchester United will try to put their Champions League campaign on track with a home match against Wolfsburg on Sept. 30. PSV will play at CSKA Moscow the same day in Group B.

Wolfsburg defeated CSKA on Tuesday to join PSV atop the group after one matchday. Julian Draxler scored his first goal for the Wolves after signing as a replacement for the departed Kevin De Bruyne.

Juventus complete comeback at City

Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata scored second-half goals as Juventus came from behind to begin Group D with a 2-1 victory at Manchester City.

The hosts had led through a Giorgio Chiellini own goal early in the second half, but Paul Pogba set up the equalizer with a brilliant pass that Mandzukic finished in the 70th minute. Morata then curled in the winner nine minutes from time.

It was the first win of the young campaign for Italian champions Juventus, who have started Serie A with two losses and a draw. City, who have won all five Premier League matches so far, lost for the first time.

The result meant that, for the first time, both Manchester clubs lost in the Champions League on the same day. In addition, the combined results cast a shadow on English football and Premier League teams' recent performances in Europe.

Elsewhere in Group D, Sevilla won three penalties—converting two—in a 3-0 victory at home to struggling Borussia Monchengladbach.

Kevin Gameiro missed one spot-kick, made another and won a third for Ever Banega, who converted. Yevhen Konoplyanka scored the other goal for Sevilla, who are hoping to make an impression on the Champions League this season after winning back-to-back Europa League crowns.

For Gladbach, it's the latest in a troubling string of defeats. The Foals sit at the bottom of the Bundesliga table after losing each of their first four matches, and they now face an uphill battle to qualify from Group D.

Ronaldo hits hat-trick in Real win

Real Madrid opened Group A with an easy 4-0 victory over visiting Shakhtar Donetsk. Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick for the second straight game, bringing his two-match total to eight following his five-goal haul against Espanyol on Saturday.

Two of Ronaldo's goals came from the penalty spot, giving him a record 11 such strikes in the Champions League. His third, a header, gave him 80 total goals in the competition, also a record. Karim Benzema opened the scoring for Real Madrid late in the first half following an error by Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.

"I'm satisfied with not having conceded a goal and scored four," Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez told UEFA.com. "I know Cristiano's level and value. He is the best player in the world and I will repeat this every time you ask me."

Elsewhere in Group A, Angel Di Maria scored his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain as the Ligue 1 champions beat visiting Malmo 2-0. The match was billed as a reunion for PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic with his former club, but Di Maria stole the headlines with a deft strike from a tight angle in just the fourth minute.

Edinson Cavani doubled the lead in the 61st minute, allowing PSG to cruise through much of the second half.

Griezmann bags brace for Atletico

Antoine Griezmann netted twice in the first half to hand Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win over Galatasaray in Istanbul. The French forward struck in the 18th and 25th minutes as Atletico completed a clean sweep of wins for Spanish teams on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in Group C, second-half goals from Nicolas Gaitan and Kostas Mitroglou earned Benfica a 2-0 victory over Astana, the first Kazakh side to reach the group stage.

Benfica and Atletico will face off on Matchday 2 at Atletico's Estadio Vicente Calderon. The winner will have the inside track on taking first place in the group.
