Ramos Requires Shoulder Scan
Tuesday, Sept. 15
News of the problem came courtesy of Spanish newspaper AS on Tuesday, who revealed the Spanish international defender had suffered the knock during Madrid's victory over Shakhtar.
The report added that fellow centre-back Raphael Varane has a "non-serious knock," but Ramos will require a scan on Wednesday to assess the full extent of his blow.
For Ramos, any time spent on the sidelines will represent a significant blow. After signing a new deal with Los Blancos in the summer and being handed the armband following the departure of Iker Casillas, he would have been hopeful of a storming season unblemished by fitness issues.
Sadly for the centre-back, this injury problem comes at a far from ideal time. Indeed, in the coming weeks Real have clashes against Granada, Athletic Bilbao and Malaga to overcome. Subsequently, manager Rafa Benitez will be desperate to have his captain at full tilt.
Los Blancos do have depth in defence. Without Ramos, the pairing is likely to be Pepe and Varane, who are both superb centre-backs in their own right. But neither offers the same combination of dynamism, tenacity and leadership that is so commonplace when Ramos does take his place at the base of this team.
Ramos has always been a player who stays in tremendous shape, with any games missed usually due to suspension rather than injury woes. So Los Blancos will be hoping that this latest knock is a one-off.
With some key games to come for Real and the European Championships edging ever closer in the summer of 2016, the defender will be desperate to build some positive momentum with some strong performances. That’ll be all the more difficult if he’s to spend time in the treatment room because of the aforementioned problems.
