Ron Leary Injury: Updates on Cowboys OG's Groin and Return

The Dallas Cowboys thrilled their fans with a dramatic 27-26 win over the New York Giants on Sunday night, but the victory came at a cost. In addition to physical setbacks for Dez Bryant and Randy Gregory, guard Ronald Leary suffered a strained groin.

Continue for updates.

Leary Could Miss Three Weeks

Monday, Sept. 14

Leary left Sunday’s game against the Giants in pain, and Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News noted the lineman is “expected to be out between one and three weeks with his strained-groin injury, per source.”

Leary started 15 games for Dallas in 2014 and all 16 in 2013 and is a significant part of the continuity up front that helped arguably the league’s best line dominate opponents on the way to last season’s NFC East crown.

DeMarco Murray led the league with 1,845 rushing yards largely because of that talent up front, including Leary. Football Outsiders ranked the Cowboys line No. 1 in the league in adjusted line yards last year, which is a stat that “takes all running back carries and assigns responsibility to the offensive line.”

Any disruption to that line is bound to impact the Dallas offense moving forward.

Mackenzy Bernadeau took Leary’s place against the Giants, although it is important to point out La'el Collins was inactive. Bernadeau did appear in 16 games last year for the Cowboys, but he only started one.

While Collins was inactive during Sunday’s game, Jeff Cavanaugh of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas/Fort Worth guessed the rookie would be active and start at left guard if Leary cannot play in the upcoming showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Collins was named second-team All-American by the Associated Press at LSU in 2014 and earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the top offensive lineman in the SEC.

He is a high-upside rookie who played against elite collegiate competition a season ago and has the talent to make an impact right away. It appears he may get his first chance to prove himself at the NFL level in a high-stakes clash with a division rival.
