Falcao to Miss Champions League Opener
Tuesday, September 15
The news was confirmed by manager Jose Mourinho during his pre-match press conference, with Chelsea's official Twitter feed noting the forward has a "little problem."
The Colombian's absence now leaves Mourinho's side with just Diego Costa and Loic Remy as their senior forward options, so it will be even more crucial that the pair stay fit as Chelsea pursue the Premier League title and compete in Europe.
Falcao forged a reputation as one of the deadliest strikers in the world during his time at Porto and Atletico Madrid, where he scored 72 and 70 goals in 87 and 90 appearances, respectively, per Transfermarkt.
However, the 29-year-old's career suffered a downturn after he picked up a cruciate ligament injury shortly after joining Monaco, and his goal return has been diminishing in the years since.
This season, the striker has netted one goal in all competitions, but he has yet to start a competitive game for the Blues.
The presence of Costa has seen Falcao largely restricted to being used as cover, so the striker is unlikely to walk into the starting lineup on his return to action.
However, should either Costa or Remy suffer an injury themselves, Chelsea's options will be severely limited, so it's imperative that Falcao return to full fitness as quickly as possible.
