Jonas Gray Cut by Dolphins: Latest Details Comments and Reaction

The Miami Dolphins reshuffled their backfield on Monday, and part of the personnel shift at the position included waiving running back Jonas Gray.

Miami announced its moves to release Gray and LaMike James through its official Twitter account. NFL agent Brett Tessler said his client, RB and return man Raheem Mostert, was signed by Miami off the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe weighed in on Gray's setback after he was promoted to the Dolphins' active roster just prior to Week 1 and had joined the practice squad only this past Tuesday:

Gray was a one-hit fantasy wonder in New England last November when he ran for 201 yards and four touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts. Not long thereafter, Gray was tardy for Patriots practice, leading coach Bill Belichick to bench him. Ever since then Gray hasn't been able to establish a role for any team.

The Patriots released Gray in September, leading him to Miami, the team he started his NFL career with as an undrafted free agent in 2012.

"I thought I earned not only a roster spot but the starting spot," said Gray upon getting cut by New England, per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

The Dolphins employ Lamar Miller, Damien Williams and rookie Jay Ajayi, who's designated to return from injured reserve, though, mitigating the need for Gray's services.

Gray's current trajectory is a sign of the times in the NFL. Running backs are as interchangeable as ever, with true superstar feature backs becoming less common or being spelled in timeshare situations. Rosters are fluctuating a lot at the moment—which also means Gray could have a plethora of opportunities elsewhere.

He may clear waivers at first, but there's still a chance for Gray to catch on with a different team. On the strength of his recent spurt of success in New England, he is more of a proven commodity than other free agents.
