Milwaukee Bucks telecasts will be more exciting this season.
Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated noted the team (and Fox Sports Wisconsin) hired announcer Gus Johnson to call 20 games during the 2015-16 NBA campaign. It is unknown at this time which games he will work, especially since he will also call college football and college basketball games for Fox Sports 1.
The Bucks are fresh off a playoff appearance, and Johnson seems to be excited to join the fold with the up-and-coming franchise, per Deitsch:
"They have Jabari Parker coming back, Greg Monroe from the Pistons who will be a great presence inside, O.J. Mayo, Michael Carter-Williams is talented, and Jason Kidd was one of the great players of his time and a terrific young coach. I think it’s going to be a wonderful opportunity to cover a talented young team."
Johnson’s assignment with the Bucks is reportedly a year-by-year agreement, but he said he hopes it's something he can do for “a long time.”
Johnson has called a variety of sports throughout his career, including the NFL, college football and soccer, but he is probably known best among American sports fans for his past work during March Madness.
His excitability and passion for the game were the perfect mix with the nerve-racking nature of the do-or-die tournament, and Johnson seemed like one of the fans during the most dramatic moments when he would scream into the microphone. Here is a look at some of his most memorable work.
Bucks fans hoping to get the same enthusiasm will be pleased with this quote from the announcer, per Deitsch:
I’m going to be myself and bring what I bring to the table. I’m calling the best basketball in the world and I’ll hopefully come up with a new vision of the game because I have been away from it for so long. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be part of this organization, which is on the rise, and to be back in the National Basketball Association. I missed it.
Amin Elhassan of ESPN summarized the feelings of many fans regarding Johnson:
Milwaukee will likely find itself in plenty of thrilling playoff games in the near future with Jabari Parker, Greg Monroe and Giannis Antetokounmpo. It now has the perfect announcer to capture the heart-pounding tension and exhilaration of those contests.
