Dudley Boyz vs. The New Day Announced for 2015 WWE Night of Champions

The Dudley Boyz were already assured of a tag team championship match at WWE Night of Champions. Now they know whom they'll be wrestling against after The New Day beat The Prime Time Players on Monday night's Raw.

Kofi Kingston and Big E combined to hit a Big Ending-DDT combination on Titus O'Neil to seal the victory, per WWE:

Damien Sandow congratulated the trio on the victory:

While he didn't actively participate in the match, Xavier Woods also caught the attention of Bleacher Report's Mike Chiari:

Although The New Day still needed to successfully defend their titles against The Prime Time Players, it felt like a foregone conclusion that the trio of Woods, Kingston and Big E would run into The Dudley Boyz at Night of Champions.

After all, The New Day have been feuding with Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley since their shocking return to WWE back in August:

The New Day's "Save the Tables" movement has also been a weekly highlight on Raw:

WWE has done a great job of playing up the Dudley Boyz's legacy and establishing them as a legendary tag team without denigrating or belittling The New Day.

Bringing back stars from yesteryear isn't always a great plan to serve the long-term goals of WWE. When you put older stars over at the expense of the current generation, you only make the guys you need to build around look worse.

A good example of this would be The New World Order, John "Bradshaw" Layfield and The New Age Outlaws decimating The Ascension back in January. A little over a month after debuting on WWE television, Konnor and Viktor were made to look like jobbers:

Bringing back The Dudley Boyz is a perfect example of using older stars to elevate current Superstars.

Bubba Ray and D-Von bring fresh eyes to the tag team division, thus allowing more fans to see the great work The New Day are doing. Or maybe those fans will instead become invested in other tag teams like The Prime Time Players, Los Matadores or The Lucha Dragons.

The Dudley Boyz also added some much-needed variety to a tag team division that was on the verge of growing stale. As enjoyable as matches between The New Day and The Prime Time Players have been, fans can see them face off only so many times before they start growing bored.

The momentum building around the tag tema division should only continue at Night of Champions.
