While the FedEx playoffs don't get anywhere near the attention of golf's traditional major events, they have turned into a legitimate championship playoff that plays a huge role in determining the season's individual champion.
With the first two rounds of the playoffs in the books, the best golfers in the world move to the third leg of the playoff series in the BMW Championship at Conway Farms in Lake Forest, Illinois.
The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup rankings are eligible to compete, and that means that top studs like Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Bubba Watson will all be in the field.
For our DraftKings fantasy team, we have $50,000 to pick the best six-man unit for the tournament. If we take a stud or two like McIlroy or Day, it will cost us with our lower-level picks.
As a result, we prefer to spread the talent around. You can't win a DraftKings fantasy contest with a couple of weak links. You need strong contenders to have a chance.
Without further ado.
Rickie Fowler, $10,700
Rickie Fowler has turned potential into production this season, and 2015 has been by far and away his best season.
Fowler has won two tournaments this year, and he also has a second- and third-place finish. He has six top-10 finishes in the 19 tournaments he has entered, and he has won more than $5.2 million. He comes into this tournament ranked third in the FedEx Cup standings.
Fowler won the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston earlier this month.
Fowler ranks 32nd in strokes gained tee to green, and he is 10th on the tour on the accuracy of his approaches from 225 to 250 yards. That's an important factor, because when he is firing from that long distance, he is capable of getting his shot close and giving himself birdie opportunities.
Fowler can be a streaky golfer, and we are betting that he will be on a hot streak at Conway Farms.
Zach Johnson, $9,500
It turned into a magical year for Zach Johnson when he won the British Open in July. Johnson showed his toughness under pressure and his ability to make clutch putts when the season was on the line under the most intense pressure.
The British Open is the only tournament that Johnson has won this year, but he has nine top-10 finishes and has earned slightly under $4.4 million. He made the cut in 18 of the 23 tournaments he entered this year.
Unlike players like McIlroy, Watson and Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson is not a big hitter. He ranks just 148th on the tour in terms of distance off the tee. However, he ranks sixth in driving accuracy and 14th in strokes gained tee to green.
More important than his numbers is his competitiveness. He wants to get out and compete with the best players on the tour, and he is averaging 69.767 strokes per round, a figure that ranks eighth on the tour.
Johnson has shown that when he gets on a roll, he can beat anyone.
Kevin Kisner, $8,100
Casual golf fans probably don't know much about Kevin Kisner, if they know who he is at all. They should, because he is an excellent golfer who has had a tremendous year.
Kisner has not won a tournament this year, but he has been close. He has three second-place finishes, and he also finished in the top 10 six times. Kisner made the cut in 20 of the 28 tournaments he has entered.
The 31-year-old Kisner depends on his accuracy to compete with the tour's top players. He finds the fairway on 68.03 percent of his drives, and that ranks 22nd on the tour. Kisner has earned more than $3.4 million this year, and that ranks 16th among all golfers.
If he can crack the top 16 in this tournament, that will help our fantasy team come up with a winning performance.
Tony Finau, $7,500
Tony Finau burst onto the golf scene this year by playing in 30 PGA tournaments and earning more than $2 million. Finau made the cut 21 times and has five top-10 finishes this year.
The 26-year-old from Salt Lake City had earned less than $8,000 on the tour prior to this year.
Finau has tremendous power and if he can harness it at Conway Farms, he will have a chance to remain in contention. Finau is averaging 309.2 yards off the tee, and that ranks seventh on the tour.
When Finau gets hot, he can roll in the birdies on a consistent basis. He is averaging 4.13 birdies per round, and that ranks seventh on the tour.
He is a player that few are paying attention to, and that's fine with Finau. He has gone further than he has ever been before, and it's all gravy from this point forward.
