Washington Redskins cornerback Chris Culliver has been suspended one game for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy.
The team's official Twitter account announced the news Monday:
This suspension is "likely" in response to Culliver's guilty plea to two misdemeanors for possession of brass knuckles and hit-and-run stemming from a March 2014 incident, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reported the Redskins are bringing in free-agent CB Will Blackmon for a workout in response to Culliver's situation:
Culliver, who signed a four-year, $32 million contract this offseason to join Washington, started Sunday's Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins and made one tackle in the game. Although he's only down for one contest against the St. Louis Rams, Washington is already in a hole to start the 2015 campaign and needs all the help it can get.
Veteran starter DeAngelo Hall suffered a rib injury in the contest against the Dolphins. He did return to the field, but the 31-year-old is coming off a twice-torn Achilles and is already banged up.
The Redskins secondary is taking another major hit in losing Culliver for the time being. Fox 5 analyst Grant Paulsen highlighted how David Amerson struggled in relief of Hall on Sunday:
Bashaud Breeland was suspended for Week 1 and has been dealing with an MCL injury, but the Washington Post's Mike Jones believes he can fill in adequately:
St. Louis Rams quarterback Nick Foles threw for 297 yards on the Seattle Seahawks' Legion of Boom secondary. It stands to reason he can attack Washington through the air in Week 2 as well based on his stellar St. Louis debut.
The timing of Culliver's brief ban, Breeland's potential rust and the urgency the Redskins face to avoid falling to 0-2 have created a storm of adversity already in the nation's capital.
Washington will be home again for Week 2, but QB Kirk Cousins will have to hold his own and make some plays in the passing game to counteract what his counterpart, Foles, does.
This is the second time in a row Cousins is facing a voracious defensive front, and he didn't fare well against Miami's headed by Ndamukong Suh, posting a Week 1 passer rating of 68.8. Robert Quinn, Aaron Donald and others will be chasing Cousins this time around.
