With wide receiver Dez Bryant reportedly out of action for at least four weeks after breaking his foot in Week 1, per David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Cowboys will work out several potential temporary replacements, including Austin Pettis.

Pettis Among Four Receivers Cowboys Will Consider Signing

Tuesday, Sept. 15

According to DallasCowboys.com, the organization intends to bring in Pettis, Hakeem Nicks, Nick Toon and Clyde Gates for workouts in hopes of adding some depth to what is now a deplete receiver corps.

Nicks is undoubtedly the most accomplished pass-catcher among the group, but Pettis is next in line as he accrued 107 receptions for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns in four seasons with the St. Louis Rams.

Although the 27-year-old wideout from Boise State never reached the high expectations many had for him as a third-round pick in 2011, he is a fairly reliable receiver who is capable of filling in over the course of a few weeks.

That is a challenge Pettis seems to be ready for:

As pointed out by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on 105.3 The Fan, there is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding Bryant's timetable for a return at this point, per DallasCowboys.com:

It takes a bone six weeks to fully recover, and we've had players with foot injuries that did not wait until the six-week period of time before they were functional and before they were able to play. He'll be able to be conditioning, things of that nature as early as two-to-three weeks into his rehab. The facts are, it's just that—no one knows. It has to do with the individual.

If the Cowboys do decide to sign Pettis, then there won't be a ton of pressure on him to produce big numbers. Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley will be in for bigger workloads at the receiver position, while tight ends Jason Witten and Gavin Escobar figure to get plenty of looks from quarterback Tony Romo as well.

Dallas simply needs a bit of insurance in case another receiver goes down, and Pettis would be a good fit in that role since he has played in it for the majority of his NFL career.
